In 1848, railroad worker Phineas Gage had a horrific accident while blasting rock in Vermont which left a two-inch hole in his left frontal lobe. Conservative, church going, non-drinking 25 year old Phineas recovered from his coma and his personality was forever altered, or so they say. Was his accident a life changing event or an excuse to leave behind the straitjacket of puritan American society? What is personality and can we move past it? This phenomenal case is still studied today over one hundred fifty years later.
